To accommodate our desire to make disciples that make other disciples, we have developed a pathway that guides each member to become shaped and driven by the Gospel.
Cultivating Hearts Passionate for God and His word
Worship is not just an experience, it is a lifestyle (Romans 12:1-2), and it means much more than singing. It is a life that begins when a person is born again by faith in Jesus (regeneration). A follower of Jesus is reconciled to a beautiful relationship with God (Romans 5:1-2; 2 Corinthians 5:20), and is given a new heart (Ezekiel 36:26, 2 Corinthians 5:17) that is filled with His transforming and securing love (Romans 5:5, 8:35-39). He is now in a position of true, heartfelt worship to God (John 4:24) because of this glorious Gospel! The Gospel not only frees the follower of Christ to worship God, but fills him with a consuming passion to know God and make Him known (to share Jesus with others). The more we know God, the more our hearts are in awe of Him and transformed by Him (2 Corinthians 3:18). At CityLight, this is the principal goal of our discipleship – that each follower of Christ would love and worship God with his entire being and to allow this love to flow through him to others. This makes the mission of God the overflow of one’s passion for God and His Word.
Pursuing Christlikeness together
Believing the Gospel is the commencement of an incredible journey of growth (Colossians 2:6-7; 2 Peter 1:5-8)—a journey that is not meant to be taken alone. God’s design is that we grow together as a body of believers (Acts 2:41-47; Ephesians 4:11-16) through the Word of God (John 17:17), and by his Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:18; Galatians 5:16). When we, as a community, know, believe, crave, love, obey, and share God’s Word, we will experience a growth that is exponential (Acts 9:31,12:24,19:20). Because of our need for this gospel community, we encourage our members to be faithful to our gatherings. Our Sunday gatherings will focus on worshiping our God together and hearing His Word taught. LifeGroups, as a counterpart to the weekly gatherings, will focus on building healthy, Gospel-centered relationships that encourage our walk with God and orient our life around the mission of God (Matthew 28:19-20).
Giving freely for the gospel
Jesus taught that where our treasure is, there our hearts will be also (Matthew 6:21). One of the ways we know that we are “all in” when it comes to following Jesus and allowing our hearts to be shaped and driven by the gospel, is that we generously leverage our resources for the advancement of His kingdom. When one orients his entire life around the gospel, and realizes that everything he has is a gift from God (1 Timothy 6:17, James 1:17), giving becomes a natural and joyful experience (2 Corinthians 8:3-7, 9:6-15). God has chosen to use our generosity not only to spread the gospel around the world, but also to cultivate our priorities around the gospel (Matthew 6:33).
Displaying Christ’s love through sacrificial living
One of the greatest ways to display the good news of Jesus is simply to love and serve others (Mark 12:31; Galatians 5:14). We are most like Jesus when we, from a heart of love, help meet the needs of others (Mark 10:45, John 13:34-35, Philippians 2:5-8). This service is a stewardship of grace marked by humility, generosity, and hospitality and is driven by a passion to magnify Jesus (Philippians 1:20-21). At CityLight, we are passionate about creating opportunities for involvement in and outside the church. Service can be pursued in various ways which include things like greeting at the front door, joining our media or music team, volunteering in our CityKids ministries, opening one’s home to host a small group, being involved in #LoveSeattle events, to name a few. The message of the gospel will be more readily received from a community of believers who are sacrificially investing themselves for the good of the city. (Jeremiah 29:4-7, John 13:34-35).
The calling of God is for every christian to make disciples that make disciples (Matthew 28:19-20, 2 Corinthians 5:20). This multiplication is not only the most effective way to build a healthy, thriving church, but to spread the gospel locally, as well as globally. In obedience to Christ, we are committed to creating a culture that encourages, trains, and mobilizes our members to be involved in the discipleship process. Our LifeGroups are designed to encourage each member to live missionally in their circle of influence, and provides them the tools they needed to develop their God-given potential as disciple-makers. If we are to see a citywide movement of the gospel, it will take an intentional and sacrificial effort. An effort that we believe is completely worth it (2 Corinthians 4:16-18)! An effort that we will joyfully commit to (Philippians 4:4), because our hearts are compelled by this life-transforming message of the gospel (2 Corinthians 5:14-15).
Included in our discipleship process, is passion to see a movement of the gospel in our city. We believe this movement will occur not through developing one big church, but through many churches being plant throughout the Seattle area. Therefore, we measure, in part, our success not by our holding capacity only but by our sending capacity. As the Lord allow us to grow and multiply, our desire is to be a church-planting church. By God’s grace we want to train, equip, send, assist, resource, and encourage our church members in establishing other Gospel-centered churches. Our dream is to be used of God by a part of a church planting movement in Seattle and all through the Northwest.
